Central to the ethos of life at Mowden Hall School is the boarding tradition, and Mowden has a vibrant boarding community. Over half of the children in the Prep School board in some capacity. However, there is no compulsion to board at Mowden.

Children can be Day Pupils, Flexi Boarders, Weekly Boarders or Full Boarders. Boarding options start in Year 3, and by the end of Year 6, lots of children choose to board many nights of the week. Children may wish to transfer from being day pupils to boarders, and can do so at any stage. There is provision for Flexi Boarding on a nightly basis, which can prove to be a useful introduction to boarding for some children.

Our committed and caring team are all familiar faces for our boarding children. With their encouragement, children feel at home and contribute to house life through joining in, enjoying being with their friends, eating and sleeping well and learning to manage and organise themselves. All alongside working hard and making the most of all that is on offer.

We welcome a small number of international boarders each year and they greatly enhance the life of the boarding houses. More details on joining us as an international boarder can be found here

Boarding Options:

  • Flexi: 2-4 nights
  • Weekly: 5 nights
  • Full: 7 nights

Boarding is very popular and does need to be booked in advance and committed to on a termly basis.

  • The quality of boarding is excellent. The outcomes for boarders are excellent and their personal development is clearly promoted by their boarding experience. They develop key qualities such as confidence and tolerance and are considerate of the needs of others.

Welcome from the Head of Boarding

Miss Leonie Serbrock

As the Head of Boarding at Mowden it is imperative to me that we have a sense of family and a sense of community here within the boarding house. Personally, I feel boarding houses should encapsulate the environment of a home and our boarding experience should emulate that of the experiences children have when growing up at home.

I am so proud to be part of this boarding family, witnessing the growth and development of our Mowden children- being together with them “as a family”. Witnessing also, among so many other things, the forging of lasting relationships, the growth of independence, the exhilaration in the acquisition of new skills, the comforting, the caring and the encouragement our boarders show each other.  I speak from the heart when I say it is a delight being in the company of our Mowden children. I so enjoy getting to know them all and look fondly already on so many fantastic and memorable moments but I also look forward to many, many more.
